BlueScope Lounge – AIA National Architecture Conference 2016

The theme for this year’s AIA National Architecture Conference was How Soon Is Now?, exploring architecture’s transformative power and how current people and projects are creating new ways for architecture to operate in the world.

Principal sponsor BlueScope Steel engaged Nexus Designs to prepare a selection of 40 prototype colours and finishes to gauge the reaction of Australia’s leading architects. Harley Anstee, our Joint Managing Director, immersed himself in BlueScope Steel’s world of colour at their Port Kembla site to curate 40 colours and finishes that would be unveiled at the AIA’s BlueScope VIP Lounge.

Working closely alongside Harley, our Graphic Design team designed three feature installations placed on the entrance path of the lounge. The first was an entrance wall made to demonstrate BlueScope Steel’s proposed facade cladding system, which became the lounge greeting point.

The second was a series of ten steel totems cladded with COLORBOND® Monument and affixed with a combination of 40 coloured sample chips using magnetic backing. The slim-lined totems maximised natural light within the space, allowing the kaleidoscopic range of colours and finishes to shine.

Last but not least, we devised a playfully interactive voting system where all 40 colour samples were displayed in an organic configuration. Upon entry, BlueScope representatives handed out 1:50 scale ‘model citizens’ for guests to use as a voting token, choosing colours or finishes they would like to see available within the range. The little ‘model citizens’ proved to be popular with guests, many deciding to take one home as a memento!
