The Right Stripes

09/50

Traditional nautical signifiers – stripes, navy and white, thick coils of rope and marine ply – were given a fresh, sophisticated approach for our refit of the MV Sorrento. Calm colour palettes and durable marine ply detailing evoke contextual simplicity, while the humble stripe was embraced and given hierarchy and texture through its use in ceiling cladding, carpets, rope detailing on furniture and staff uniforms.

Navigating previously unchartered waters, our first nautical project, the MV Sorrento passenger ferry, gave us a welcome entry into the maritime industry. Completely reworking the planning to overhaul an inefficient retail space and creating an interior designed to enhance the Bay crossing journey of both leisure travellers and daily commuters, our Graphic and Interior Design studios worked side by side to create a truly integrated, enjoyable experience.

Seamlessly integrating into the interiors, the historically maritime typeface, Pressura by GrilliType, was chosen. This typeface is based on the stamped engineering lettering found on shipping containers, the perfect fit for this sea-crossing vessel.

The naming and branding of the café RORO was inspired by the term Roll-on Roll-off, an industry term for car and passenger ferries, and moved away from hot food to focus on fresh, regional offerings.

Staring out dreamily at the coastal scenery and occasional dolphin, passengers now experience a journey of nautical discovery, orchestrated by careful blending of function and aesthetics. Honouring the coastal regions of the Mornington and Bellarine Peninsulas, we’ve captured and enhanced the relaxed state of travellers crossing water in the refurbished interior and graphic design of the MV Sorrento.
