City of Melbourne Signage
Local and Indigenous history and the communal objectives for the building’s use are expressed through detail, form and materiality.
As an important hub for creative and community learning, the Kathleen Syme Library and Community Centre required a signage and wayfinding strategy that balanced the acknowledgement of traditional landowners and Victorian heritage with the needs of a contemporary, council-regulated space. Core to the storytelling and visual language was the circular patterns found within the commissioned artwork by Wurundjeri artist Mandy Nicholson, used in overlapped relief throughout the building and combined with elements of the City of Melbourne branding and Victorian architectural detailing. The colour palette and signage substrates were carefully considered to complement the interior finishes of the newly refurbished building.
